AI summary

Gives you Libriomancy — reaching into a book and pulling out what you read about, drawing on the collective imagination and belief of everyone who has read it — plus an uncapped, endlessly growing pool of magical power usable for any other magic, superpower or art. Your power in general still obeys whatever fundamental laws a setting has, with one exception: Libriomancy itself has total and infinite potential and can evolve without limit in every respect. The art is remarkably cheap because readers' imagination supplies most of the fuel, though overuse burns out a book so that nothing more can be drawn from that story unless the item is returned; its great practitioners sealed books, trapped souls in printing-press golems and channelled phrases directly, and its usual limits — that only what fits through the book can come out, and that people drawn from books arrive knowing they were made moments ago — are at worst temporary problems for you.

Effects

18
  • You receive the magical power and talent of Drawing things from books and a pool of magical power to fuel this.

  • Your magical power is uncapped, being able to grow endlessly in power and fitness. You may use this power to use any other magic, superpowers, arts, etc...

  • Although it's uncapped, the laws of magic and reality are still relevant for you, as long as they are fundamental facts of the power system/universe and not a factor of power/fitness, if a magic system needs you to eat a golden nugget to work, or if resurrection magic is impossible in this universe then that's that. Of course, this is not counting other Essences you may have.

  • With one exception.

  • This exception is Libriomancy, you may evolve it without limit in absolutely everything even if it really shouldn't work in such a way at the start. Total and infinite potential in this art in particular.

  • Libriomancy is the art of taking things out of books. Take a book out of the shelf, read a passage about Excalibur, plunge your hand into the book and take the sword out.

  • Technically speaking it's using the collective imagination and belief of all readers of a thing to summon it in reality.

  • It is a supremely inexpensive art because the user only channels a small portion of the spell, most of it is fueled by the imagination of readers. The viewpoint of the user takes precedence, however, thus things will mostly work in the way you think they should. All things manifested have a magical link to you.

  • It is not infinite though, overuse of an item burns out a book, and none may draw that particular thing from that story, this can be lessened by delivering the thing back where it came.

  • The greatest users of this art even managed to do very esoteric things like sealing books so none may draw power from them, seal peoples souls in golems made of printing presses, channel phrases like "let there be light" into spells that allows one to transform into light and even delve into stories directly and emerge in a separate book of the same type.

  • There are quite a few limits to the art, but given the drinker of the essence has literally infinite potential in this art, then it's a temporary problem at best.

  • The most relevant problems are three.

  • Firstly, the power only works in books, and in books of the exact same mold of others and things can only be taken that can fit through the book in question. This is because of the collective focus of all readers is easier to gather, a sort of focusing lens. This is a very mild problem, given very time you should be able to drawn things from tablets, and then bring things bigger than the opening of the books, and soon after move on to TV's, video games and other things that gather focus and belief. If you have a truly good memory you may even use Libriomancy through yourself as a focus. It is considerably easier to get around this problem if you have greater amounts of magic than the average Libriomancer (They have particularly small magic pools).

  • The second problem is that people that are taken out of books tend to have a few problems with things like "I didn't really exist, I was made 5 seconds ago, my personality is the culmination of a million different viewpoints from readers". Thus, creatures taken from books are all violently insane and will kill everything around it. The only two exceptions are things that have no thoughts but might grow into a person, such as a magical rock that births an animal. Or too un-intelligent to truly think such as a small insect, and even then they would be quite crazy for a few days.

  • The third and most important problem is that of possession, overuse of Libriomancy opens the mind to the books, thus the violently insane characters will start to possess the user, usually you will get ample time to remediate the situation. Just stop using it for a day or two if you start hearing Darth Vader talking in your brain.

  • There may or may not exist more problems given the nature of reality you are in, or if you travel the multiverse.

  • Again, you have infinite potential for growth in this magical art, these things are temporary roadblocks.

  • Your magic pool and your Libriomancy are merged with your inner self and cannot be taken away or affected, manipulated or destroyed in any way. Libriomancy will always work in any place, any universe and any world. While other magic systems will have to be by a case by case basis.
