While you can certainly kill these rivals, you will never be without at least one active rival for more than a year at the very most. It’s easier to just simply have 2-3 around that you like. That’ll usually stop this Essence from activating and creating more. In addition if you have some sort of Plot Armor then so do they, and theirs will be just as strong as yours is. So killing a rival will always be a hassle.
It is not impossible for you to befriend a rival, but it’ll be incredibly hard to pull this off even if you have enhanced charisma of some kind. Plus you’ll usually have to beat them in a fight beforehand. Even if you succeed they’ll still want to get stronger and compete with you, they’ll just be friendlier about it.
